Synopsis:

New York Times bestselling author Cora Carmack’s young adult debut: Roar.

In a land ruled and shaped by violent magical storms, power lies with those who control them.

Aurora Pavan comes from one of the oldest Stormling families in existence. Long ago, the ungifted pledged fealty and service to her family in exchange for safe haven, and a kingdom was carved out from the wildlands and sustained by magic capable of repelling the world’s deadliest foes. As the sole heir of Pavan, Aurora’s been groomed to be the perfect queen. She’s intelligent and brave and honorable. But she’s yet to show any trace of the magic she’ll need to protect her people.

To keep her secret and save her crown, Aurora’s mother arranges for her to marry a dark and brooding Stormling prince from another kingdom. At first, the prince seems like the perfect solution to all her problems. He’ll guarantee her spot as the next queen and be the champion her people need to remain safe. But the more secrets Aurora uncovers about him, the more a future with him frightens her. When she dons a disguise and sneaks out of the palace one night to spy on him, she stumbles upon a black market dealing in the very thing she lacks—storm magic. And the people selling it? They’re not Stormlings. They’re storm hunters.

Legend says that her ancestors first gained their magic by facing a storm and stealing part of its essence. And when a handsome young storm hunter reveals he was born without magic, but possesses it now, Aurora realizes there’s a third option for her future besides ruin or marriage.

She might not have magic now, but she can steal it if she’s brave enough.

Challenge a tempest. Survive it. And you become its master.

by Max Kahl
Release date: June 10, 2017
Genre: High Fantasy/Epic Fantasy

Meet A New Book

An interesting sounding fantasy story that has real potential for depth. The synopsis is a bit confusing with lots of place and people names that are unfamiliar, but the last line that’s what intrigues me.

Synopsis:

After the invasion of the Kingdom of the Mountain, an era of darkness hovered for years over the Continent of Imnavel. Only a few, decimated after decades of war, resisted the attacks.

But the Hordes of the East finally conquered the Elevated Mountain of Iver Osterith, last bastion of defense of the inhabitants of Imnavel. This last act forced the survivors to regroup in order to repel the invasions or perish forever.

New armies rose. New weapons were wielded. New steels were forged. Forests and lakes died. Even the Ancient heard once again the rumour of war – that old rumour which hadn’t been heard since the First Eras.

From then on, the Hermehrs waited for their revenge, one which would return to them their past and history, their ancient lands and their old songs of honourable kings and noble lords. Only one warrior could do that. And his name is reflected in old prophecies.

The Golden Eras and the Wise Eras had come to an end to give way to the Era of the Elwendur – the Migration of the Peoples.

Book Blitz: A Spoonful of Grace

A Spoonful of Grace: Mealtime Blessings in Bite-sized Pieces
by Annette Hubbell
Release date: Feb 2017
Genre: Family devotional, Children’s devotional

Meet A New Book

A book that sounds like a great way to connect with your family, in bite sized pieces. (Sorry I just couldn’t resist the pun.) A special grace/blessing/prayer for each meal sounds like a great idea, and I’m glad that they are kept intentionally short enough for a kids attention span.

Just 2 minutes each day can change your family meal time for a lifetime.

A Spoonful of Grace is a collection of 366 evening meal graces taken from all 66 books of the Bible and designed to provide meaningful exposure to prayer and the Bible at a most opportune time: the family evening meal.

The Scripture/grace devotions are inviting, can be grasped at several levels, and are brief enough (about two minutes) to hold the attention of hungry kids.

Here’s why:

  • Each day has an application section called Grace Notes: ideas and quotes to further illustrate the message and stimulate conversation.
  • Sundays are for Story Graces. These 52 devotions are a bit longer to afford the suspenseful, engrossing reading of stories such as David and Goliath, Daniel in the lions’ den, and Jonah and the big fish.
  • Special Graces are celebrations such as Easter, Thanksgiving, Christmas, birthdays.
  • Each grace:
    • Supports discussions of God’s attributes and of faith-based values, offering moral examples like forgiveness, friendship, honesty, trust, even table manners.
    • Creates curiosity about the Bible and ways in which Scripture can be applied to today’s issues.
    • Demonstrates how the act of praying together lifts one’s own spirit; fosters praise; and increases mutual feelings of appreciation, gratefulness, and accountability.
    • Teaches without overt instruction, similar to hiding extra veggies in the spaghetti sauce.
    • Remind us that our food, as well as God’s countless other daily blessings, is a gift.

Book Blitz: Sink

Sink
by M.E. Rhines
(Mermaid Royalty #1)
Publication date: July 31st 2017
Genres: Fantasy, Young Adult

Meet A New Book

I am a HUGE fan of the Little Mermaid, and mermaids in general, and this book look too good to pass up. And if it’s from Clean Teen Publishing that is always a plus. Sink looks like it’s win-win. I can’t wait to get my teeth into this one. 😉

Obedience has always been a matter of survival for sixteen-year-old mermaid princess Pauline. Her mother is the tyrannical Queen Calypso, who rules the kingdom of Atargatis with an iron trident. To utter one word against her would mean banishment—or worse—so Pauline bites her tongue and minds her manners. But on the eve of her sister’s merling-shower, all of that is about to change. Confronted with the truth about what happens to the human men who are betrothed to the mermaids of Atargatis, Pauline realizes she can stay silent no more.

Determined to end the queen’s dark tradition, Pauline goes along on a search for shipwreck survivors, secretly planning to free them. But things get complicated when she finds herself inexplicably drawn to one of the men. Before she realizes what’s happening, she has kissed him—and a kiss from a mermaid is not without consequences. Now Pauline will have to risk everything if she is to save the young man and thwart the queen’s dark plans…

Book Blitz: The Cauldron Stirred

The Cauldron Stirred
by Judith Sterling
(Guardians of Erin, #1)
Publication date: July 21st 2017
Genres: Fantasy, Paranormal, Young Adult

Meet A New Book

I’ve been fascinated with the Otherworld ever since reading Stephen R Lawhead’s Paradise War Triology. The Cauldron stirred is not only about the Otherworld, and it’s set in Ireland a setting which I would like to read more books set in.

Ashling Donoghue never dreamed moving to Ireland would rock her perception of reality and plunge her into a mystery that brings legend to life.

At seventeen, she’s never had a boyfriend, but she feels an immediate connection to Aengus Breasal, the son of the wealthy Irishman who’s invited her family to stay at his Killarney estate. For the first time in her life, a guy she likes seems attracted to her.

But Aengus is secretive, with good reason. He and his family are the Tuatha Dé Danann, ageless, mythical guardians adept at shifting between this reality and the magical dimension known as the Otherworld. Evil forces from that world threaten the Breasals, the Donoghues, and all of Ireland. Ashling must open her heart, face her fears, and embrace a destiny greater than she could ever have imagined.

Book Blitz: Gears of Fate

Gears of Fate
by Wilbert Stanton
(Forgotten Gods #1)
Published by: Curiosity Quills Press
Publication date: June 20th 2017
Genres: Fantasy, Mythology, Young Adult

Meet A New Book

Ok, so the mix of steampunk, mythology and dystopia sounds like the setup up for a joke, (Steamboy and Zeus walk into a bar… well I don’t know where to go from there.) But the description sounds good without being cheesy. If Stanton can pull this wild mix off it will be interesting.

Centuries have passed since the Fey conquered Earth, forcing mankind and gods alike to flee to the sky city Olympus. Forgotten gods walk amongst man, lost and powerless. Little do they suspect a second Fey war looms, and an unlikely duo will set in motion the gears of fate.

Zak Walker is a fringe rat living in the slums who would do anything to protect his sister, Alice. His neglectful father threatens to consign him to a life away from home on an airship, but he yearns for his life to mean something more than drudgery.

Princess Seneca Rose is the last surviving member of the Seelie royals. They tried to establish peace with mankind, but fell to the forces of Queen Mob and the Unseelie Court. Fleeing for her life, Seneca arrives on Olympus in hopes of uniting the forgotten gods against the oncoming Fey.

Zak couldn’t care less about the fate of Olympus, until faeries kidnap Alice. He doesn’t believe Seneca’s stories of faeries or gods, but soon has no choice but to accept their lives are intertwined. All his life, he’s dreamed of something more. If he cannot face the dangers that await down on Earth, the gods, mankind, and his sister Alice are all doomed.

Meet A New Book

Robin Hood is pretty much an instaread for me. I love that this book is by a publisher that promises clean reads. As they say on their website, “We do not believe in censorship; we believe in the right to know. Every reader, no matter what their age is, has certain boundaries they don’t want to cross.” If you’ve been a reader on my blog you have probably picked up on the fact that I do not enjoy graphic sex scenes in my books. I’m excited to find a publisher that will let me know what I’m getting into before I pick up the book.

Robin of Lockesly was neither the son her father wanted, nor the daughter her mother expected. When she refuses an arranged marriage to a harsh and cruel knight, the deadly events that follow change her destiny forever.

After a night of tragedy, Robin and the few remaining survivors flee to Nottingham. With a newfound anonymity, they start to live different lives. There, she and her band make mischief, robbing from the rich and giving to the poor. But charity isn’t the only thing she wants–she wants revenge.

As the sheriff draws his net closer, Robin’s choices begin to haunt her. She’ll have to choose between what’s lawful and what her conscience believes is right–all while staying one step ahead of the hangman.

Lady of Sherwood is a unique young adult retelling of the beloved Robin Hood legend. Filled with action and romance, this new series follows a teenage heroine through her fantastic, yet dangerous adventures.

I seem to be on a Steampunk kick lately. This book had a steampunk look and feel when I read about it in the email from Xpresso Book Tours, so I said “why not?” But it’s really more of a sci-fi story than steampunk. As one of the quotes on Amazon calls it “I, Robot meets Beauty and the Beast”  – Leah’s Bookish Obsession

A Near Future Retelling of Beauty and the Beast

Alainn’s father is not a bad man. He’s a genius and an inventor. When he’s hired to create the robot Rose, Alainn knows taking the money is a mistake.

Rose acts like a human. She looks exactly like Alainn. But, something in her comes out wrong.

To save her father from a five year prison sentence, Alainn takes Rose’s place. She says goodbye to the sun and goes to live in a tower no human is allowed to enter. She becomes the prisoner of a man no human is allowed to see.

Believing that a life of servitude lies ahead, Alainn finds a very different fate awaits her in the company of the strange, scarred recluse.

Bottom Line:

I can’t say for sure. The excerpt was interesting, but not quite what I had expected from the blurb. This one will be a wait and see, how other reviews turn out. But the giveaway looks awesome, so I hope you will enter. If you read Ensnared please let me know how it turns out, and if you liked it.

I don’t know how you can be a book lover and not instantly see the appeal of the book. It went into my Goodread TBR shelf almost instantly. And after reading chapter one (linked to below) I am definitely going to keep read this.

Book one of The Black Pages

Elana Black has the power to make herself fictional. But when she decides to start saving all the people in books and TV shows who die just for the sake of advancing the plot, she quickly learns that she’s not the only one with her powers.

All Elana wants to do is save people. But these others don’t want the stories to change, and they’ll do everything they can to stop her.

If you had the power to change fate… to create a happy ending where there wasn’t one before… would you do it if it meant risking your own?

Download Chapter One of Empty Threat

Bottom Line:

I can’t wait to read this and I have requested one of the review copies from Xpresso Book Tours, so hopefully I’ll get my hands on it soon. It’s hilarious to me that it is only in paperback on Amazon, but I get that it works for the kind of story it is. But if they had it for kindle unlimited I’d already be reading it. 😉
