5 Word reviews is my new blog feature. You can check out my other posts here. And part one of the Newbery books here.
This post covers the Newbery titles I’ve read from 1960 to 1990.
1960: Onion John by Joseph Krumgold – Don’t try changing weird neighbor
1961: Island of the Blue Dolphins by Scott O’Dell – Worth reading again as adult
1963: A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L’Engle – Great book in every way
1969: The High King by Lloyd Alexander – Why was book 5 chosen?
1972: Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH by Robert C. O’Brien – Big 80’s kid nostalgia factor
1978: Bridge to Terabithia by Katherine Paterson – Bittersweet YA story about friendship
1986: Sarah, Plain and Tall by Patricia MacLachlan – Can read in an hour
1987: The Whipping Boy by Sid Fleischman – Probably scar you for life

We had a copy of Sarah, Plain and Tall when I was very young (too young to read on my own) and my mom used to read it to us. I don’t remember what it was about but I do remember it being quite thin..
