Take a look at my intro post to find out more about the Classic Remarks Redux series. As always, thanks to the ladies at Pages Unbound for the prompts and inspiration.
Sept. 23, 2016: Which Austen adaptation is your favorite and why?
Emma, the 1996 one with Gwyneth Paltrow… I guess. I mean if I have to pick one.
I think this is as good as place as any to outline why I don’t enjoy Austen.
- The time period – Georgian England just has nothing to interest me. It like a bland time frame between much more interesting things.
- Women’s Rights – I can’t stand the whole daughter exist to get married and hopefully can be married “up” to improve the family name. That women are not allowed to own anything or be their own person. (I know some would say this is part of the satire of Austen. But, it’s really hard for me to read Austen as satire. It’s too subtle and I’m too removed from the time period.)
- Drama – Ugh, just be clear with each other. Say what you mean and stop playing games. It just drives me nuts how whole storylines can revolve around the twittering of women and girls.
- Romance – If you read much of my blog you’ll find out I’m just generally not a fan of romance. Especially as a major plotline. Especially the will-they-won’t-they plot. Especially the enemies-to-lovers plot.
I understand that a lot of people enjoy the works of Jane Austen, I’m just not one of them. There are plenty of other classic books out there.

Ah, I don’t think I’ve seen this one actually! Maybe sometime in the future!
I think I prefer the new Emma adaptation a little more than this one myself.
