Review: The Daemoniac

Review:

Kat Ross has emerged as one of my favorite new fantasy authors. Her Forth Element trilogy was wondrous and I’m loving the Forth Talisman trilogy. But…

UGH I CANNOT TAKE ANOTHER JACK THE RIPPER RETELLING.

It’s like every other book series and half of the BBC Mystery shows have to have their own Jack the Ripper retelling, re-imaging or spin off. I’m sorry, but I was done with Jack the Ripper 50 stories ago. Kat, this in nothing personal, because I adore you.

It also took me a while to grow to like the heroine of this story, Harrison Fearing Pell and the whole Sherlock Holmes feel of her partnership with John Weston. The Daemoniac has a lot going for it though, it’s a good mystery and has lots of great locations that are wonderfully described, a time period that I especially love and the end ramps up the action and drama. After reading the second book in the series The Thirteenth Gate (Dominion Mysteries) I have warmed up to the series even more. Spoiler: Whatever disappointments I had with The Daemoniac ended with The Thirteenth Gate.
